The Carpenter – OMS Afghanistan maintains the tool inventory for the carpentry section and ensures all equipment is in a good state of repair in order to perform carpentry projects. In addition the Carpenter, designs, constructs, remodels, retrofits, and repairs interior and exterior structures made of wood, drywall, plaster, concrete, or brick. Works under the direction of the Contractor Maintenance Foremen.
Designs, constructs, retrofits, and repairs cabinets, tables, shelves, benches, partitions, flooring, doors, window frames, and other types of furniture. May install and repair modular furniture.
Cleans, maintains, adjusts, calibrates, and services equipment used in the performance of duties.
Monitors work done by outside contractors for adherence to state and federal code requirements and repots back to supervisor.
Installs, repairs, and maintains buildings roofs.
Assists in the writing of specifications for repairs and new construction.
Maintains appropriate service and repair records.
Researches, purchases, and takes inventory of equipment parts, chemicals, and supplies.
Responds to routine and emergency calls for repair and service.
May train and direct the work of other contractor staff in the area.
Performs other related work as required.
There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.
Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
At least three years of residential construction experience required.
Skill and experience level greater than a helper or laborer, capable of performing cabinetry, finish work, framing, and decking required.
Knowledge of residential construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, technologies, tools, equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety required.
Proficient at stain-grade trim work, hang doors, drilling and setting door hardware, setting windows, layout for stairs and common rafters, and reading blueprints while utilizing appropriate math skills required.
Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates required.
Ability to understand verbal and written instructions required.
Ability to establish relationships with all parties involved in the construction process to facilitate harmonious working relationships during projects, and permit prompt resolution of problems and conflicts as they occur required.
Ability to organize assigned tasks for completing along or with help required.
Ability to complete and fulfill paperwork required for personal time sheets in a timely manner required.
Must be proficient with Microsoft Suite of products including, Word, Excel, Access and E-mail business software. Must demonstrate a good attitude and ability to work as a member of a Team. Position requires self-motivation and the ability to work effectively under a minimum of supervision. Must be able to multi-task efficiently, work in a fast paced environment on multiple projects, and have a strong attention for detail.
