Job Summary
The Gunner / Flight Instructor (FI) performs duties as a Gunner or Crew Chief on rotary wing aircraft in support of the US Embassy in Afghanistan on missions that are accomplished during day and night, while wearing Night Vision Goggles (NVG). Conducts training in Method of Instruction (MoI) procedures and techniques in accordance with lesson plans.


Principal Accountabilities
•Perform as a crewmember on helicopters in support of the U.S. Department of State (DoS), under oversight from the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Office of Aviation (INL/A) primarily in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
•Assist in the transportation of Cargo and Passengers to include other missions (Command and Control, Movement of Quick Reaction Forces and other Security Forces, Armed Escort) as directed by the Senior Aviation Advisor (SSA) or Aviation Operations Director (AOD).
•Provide technical guidance and assistance to flight crews regarding observed discrepancies and malfunctions.
•Perform and/or assists with aircrew briefings and debriefings.
•Operate and maintain the M-4, M-9, GAU-17 / M-134 Mini Gun and M-240.
•Understand maintenance forms / historical records and ensures they are accurate, up to date, and complete.
•Ensure the cargo compartment is properly configured for each mission, and that cargo is properly restrained.
•Supervise and participate in loading / unloading operations.
•Perform aircraft servicing, inspection, and duties including fueling operations and aircraft configuration changes as required.
•Conduct academic and hands-on performance training and administers evaluations to ensure crewmember proficiency and standardization of training in addition to maintaining Individual Aircrew Training Folders (IATF) and completing required Air Wing Information System (AWIS) entries.
•Conducts training in Method of Instruction (MoI) procedures and techniques in accordance with lesson plans.
•Tracks non-rated crewmember progress and reports training status to the Senior Standardization Pilot.
•Perform other administrative task as assigned.
•Performs additional duties related to flight operations as required.

Knowledge & Skills
•Ability to maintain NVG currency.
•Qualifications in assigned aircraft before or incident to assignment.
•Ability to successfully complete weapons qualification (M-4, M-9, GAU-17 / M-134 Mini Gun and M-240), security training, and psychological profiling prior to deployment.
•Possess a current US Passport or the ability to obtain one before assignment.
•Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance through the Department of Defense Background Investigations as a condition of continued employment. A current Secret clearance is desired.

Experience & Education
•High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
•750 total rotary wing flight hours.
•FAA A&P Certificate and current FAA Class III medical Certificate are required.
•Three (3) or more years of experience in the maintenance and support of the following weapons: M-4, M-9, GAU-17 / M-134 and M-240.
•Branch 15 Aviation MOS (15TK1 or 15UK1), USAF AFSC 1A1X1 / 1A7X1, USMC MOS 6174 or military / commercial equivalent highly desired.
•Night Vision Goggle (NVG) qualified with 250 hours of NVG experience.
•Combat experience as a crew chief or gunner and previous exposure to operations in Afghanistan and/or Iraq is desired.
•Three (3) or more years experience as a non-rated or non-pilot crewmember instructor.


Physical Requirements/Working Environment
•Potential for exposure to hostile fire in this region is high.
•The applicant must not have physical restrictions or existing medical conditions that would prevent them from working in remote locations with limited medical care.
•Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for up to twelve (12) hours per day and sit for up to eight (8) hours per day.
•Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depth.
•Must be able to routinely climb / descend stairs.
•Must be able to read and interpret newspaper and typewritten print, maps, aeronautical charts, and weather charts.
•Must be able to crouch, crawl, routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above/below shoulders.
•Must be able to see aircraft in flight, read dials/gauges, identify small objects and hand tools.
•Must be physically capable of climbing vertical ladders or built-in aircraft steps.
•May be required to lift up to 50 pounds to a height of four (4) feet and be required to lift up to 20 pounds to a height of seven (7) feet.
•Must have no physical limitations that would prevent the wearing of flight helmet, body armor, or other personal protective equipment required for this position.
•Must be able to perform basic ground evasion maneuvers.
•Must be able to travel to and between remote locations in austere and/or hostile environments.
•May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure.
•May be exposed to extreme noise from turbine and jet engine aircraft.
•May be exposed to fumes, gas, airborne particles, chemical mist, vapors, ultra-violet and infrared radiation.
•May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts, vehicles or aircraft.

Travel
•Travel to and between CONUS and OCONUS locations as requested is required.
